We have a winner!

Hello Ladies:

I just wanted to say thank you for participating in our weight loss challenge and at this time I would like to announce that we almost had two winners.  Actually, three people reached their 10 pound goal on time.  One member was behind and caught up by reaching her 10 pound goal.  She has dropped in clothe size from a size 16 to a size 6!!!  Congratulations to Shelley for reaching her goal. She was not able to make it to the morning meeting but I met with her in the evening and she still reached her goal (usually we weigh more in the evening by at least 3 pounds).

Congratulations to Brandy also.  She went from 162 pounds (after delivering her new baby on Dec.2004) down to 146 pounds!!!.  She is watching her refined sugars and is exercising 3-4 X a week at Curves for Women.  The winner of the challenge was Kayla.  She went down from 185 pounds down to 168 and is now wearing size 8-9!!! She is 18 years old and has weighed 185 since the age of 12!  She is so excited because she starts college this year and she feels so much better and healthier.  Her goal is to lose another 16 pounds before she starts school.  She does not have a lot of time to exercise due to work and school schedule but she has giving up all soda pop and sweets!

Congratulations to Carol Cuff also.  She wanted to lose 10 pounds when she initially started healthymoms with a mission to get healthy and she reached her goal yesterday!!  She is a great inspiration to us all because she is over 40 and she is not allowing that to keep her from reaching her goals.

Everyone that participated in the challenge is a winner because they had the courage to acknowledge that they need to do something about their  weight level and regardless of the how many pounds were lost in the end.  Admitting and recognizing that is important for you and your family to be  healthier is the first step on reaching your goals.  The second important step is putting a plan together that is reasonable and sticking to it until you reach your ultimate goal (no matter if it takes one or two years) but you do need to be constantly working on reaching your goals so that you can reach your ultimate goal and not lose focus.  It's your health and what you do with it now will determine a lot later!

I will continue to aim for a healthier lifestyle and I hope that you do the same.

Thank you for your time and commitment!

Love,

Angie

Fiber is good stuff

Hi Ladies:

I just wanted to share with you a good weight-loss tip that I read last Sunday and started doing on Monday after we weighed-in together.  I increased my fiber intake from about 8 grams up to 35-40 and in just three days, I broke my plateau and lost three pounds!  I have not gained them back and it is safe to do every day.  I also have more energy.  Maybe it's because I got rid of some toxins from my body with the fiber too!  Get some fiber today.  I like Fiber Choice (chewable tablets) and Wal-Mart has it for approx $8.00.

I also have increased my calcium intake (in hopes of keeping my fat storage down) but mainly to see if it will help prevent my horrible sweet cravings during my pms.  I will be taking this on a trial basis until my monthly cycle starts and I will report the progress to you after April 10th (when I return from Chicago).  I only increased it by taking 600 mg more a day.  Since I eat low fat string cheese and low fat yogurt  on a pretty regular basis, I didn't need to go up much more.   However, if you are not eating low-fat dairy products, it was recommended by Diane in their article "The Big Fat on Calcium" to take up 1200mg of calcium a day (from food is always best) but not always the leanest way unless you stick to fat-free or low-fat.  Don't forget to take your daily multi-vitamin.

Well, Shelley said after she weighed-in on Tuesday, "May the Biggest Loser Win".

Keep on losing and eating balanced and small meals!

We will see each other on April 15th to check our 4 week progress!  If anyone reaches their goal while I'm in Chicago the week of April 1st to April 10th  (you better not! You know I'm kidding) please contact Casey at the Curves in Fern Prairie.  I will leave my scale there with her and you can stop by and weigh-in with her.   Here's the catch, if you lose 10 pounds in four weeks (that's kind of fast!), you will have to wait and re-weigh again on May 15th with the entire group just to make sure that you kept it off and to win the "jack pot".  I know that when it comes off that fast, it goes back up as fast as it came down!  So be careful and stick to approx 1.5. lbs-2.5 lbs per week.  Slow and steady  wins the race!

Please e-mail me any questions or comments you may have.  I wish you and me great success with this challenge because summer is right around the corner.  We want to be ready for it!

Love you all,

Angie

What is this Blogger About?

This Blogger is to challenge women that may need/want to lose weight as a group (team) instead of trying to do it on their own. Basically, it is a way to exchange information. It is an excellent way for woment to communicate their goals, to share exercise tips and healthy eating ideas. Through this blogger we will motivate and encourage one another, but most importantly, we will be accountable to healthymoms.info! We are women with a mission to get healthy, together as a team. Come on! Give us a try (three month period). Each Phase is three months long. Some of you may only need to join for one phase (we attempt to lose 10% of our current weight each time we join a phase). Some of us however, will need to do Phase II and maybe Phase III and that's okay. We are here to help you with our words of encouragement. Log on and give us a try. What do you have to lose (ha, ha that's funny!). All we have to lose are excess pounds!!!

Health Risks in being over-weight

If you're having trouble staying motivated to eat healthfully and exercise I hope this motivates you: Did you know that being over-weight as little as by 10 pounds, increases your risk for developing serious health problems such as gallbladder disease, Heart disease, High Blood Pressure, Strokes, and even Respiratory problems? According to the article found in Parade, Jan.4, 2004, "The risk of developing a serious condition including heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Breast and Colon Cancer and dying early increases with every pound you add". "We are seeing 9-year-olds being diagnosed with adult onset diabetes says Dr. David Fein of the Princeton longevity Center in Princeton;N.J. After reading this new data, it sure motivated me to really start establishing permanent healthy habits for my family and me in our home. I hope this motivates you too! We can finish this weight loss challenge with positive results. Don't get discouraged. We can do this together!

Nutrition and Weight loss Facts

1 gram of protein contains 4 calories
1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories
1 gram of fat contains 9 calories
This is the one that will surprise many of you!
1 gram of alcohol contains 7 calories

There is no secret formula in losing weight. According to my research, if a person increases their activity level on a daily basis but does not increase their calorie intake, they can lose between 1/2 lb to 2 lbs in one week. Running, dancing and jumping rope for a little as 12 minutes at a time will burn calories off your body very rapidly! The second way to lose weight is by decreasing your calorie intake on a daily basis. By adding exercise to your daily schedule, you don't have to restrict calories so severely. And by adding muscle through strength-building exercises, you'll burn additional calories even when you are not exercising. This is the beauty of building muscle. Once you calculate your BMR=Basal Metabolic Rate. The quickest formula to get this number is simply by multiplying your current weight by 10. If you are very active you can add between 300-400 calories. Once you have calculated how many calories you are consuming subtract that number by 500 to lose one pound per week, to lose 1 1/2 pounds reduce your calories by 750 and to lose 2 pounds you need to reduce your calories by 1000. This is why increasing your activity level is recommended by many of the experets so that you don't have to restrict your calories so severely. This is actualy considered safe but may be too low for some people's needs. Experts agree that by adding muscle tone through muscle strengthening exercises will help you burn additional calories even when you are not exercising! This sounds good to me! Try to aim for 1 to 1 1/2 pounds off/week. This will prevent weight regain. "Slow and steady wins the race". For those of you that want a faster drop in weight, select a good daily aerobic exercise and do it at least four times a week. I personally recommend Curves for Women along with walking and/or running. They offer an excellent/quick program that gives you both aerobics and muscle strengthening all in one. They are offering a free trial week/no commitment. They are also offering an 80 % reduction on their membership fee just for mentioning healthymoms.info or Angie Rupe (only in the Camas-Washougal location. Ask for Casey or Lisa).

Do limit saturated fats found in cookies, and pastries, and chips. Eat whole grains instead of refined flour breads. Limit Salty foods, and stay away from soft drinks, and limit fruit juice drinks. Drink low/fat free instead. It will provide you with calcium and protein (which helps fight hunger cravings) Don't forget to drink least 8 glasses of water a day and don't forget your vitamins while you are exercising and restricting calories.
